PSSO (Prince Salman Science Oasis) will be offering a very exciting program called “TREP$” to the children of different schools this year at its facility on King Abdullah Road, beside KACST (King Abdulaziz for Science and Technology). In 2006, the New Jersey PTA (Parent Teacher Association) in the USA (United States of America) bestowed this program with its Presidential Award! Using the abbreviation “TREP$,” it teaches children the skills to become young enTREPreneurS.
This program is a favorite of parents and students alike. Children will love TREP$ because in this program, they are given the opportunity to be treated as adults. Parents will love TREP$ because this program will encourage professional behavior and reinforce the same positive characteristics we all work to instill in our children. TREP$ is a real situation that rewards focus, determination, teamwork, creativity, communication skills, and good old-fashioned hard work. Since it does not require athleticism, superior intellect, artistic talent, or a fat wallet, this wonderful opportunity is uniquely accessible to all children!
We believe entrepreneurial thinking and scientific thinking are very similar. Both require creative thinking and collaboration to make advances. Also, with both science and entrepreneurship, one must come up with a hypothesis or best guess as to what might work and then execute a plan to see if it works or not. Scientists and entrepreneurs are both called on to think critically, take risks, innovate, and problem solve. Life skills like leadership, ethics, accountability, adaptability, people skills, productivity, self direction, and social responsibility are also important for both the scientist and the entrepreneur.
In the TREP$ Workshops, the children enjoy participating in hands-on activities to learn the business basics of product development, business finance, marketing research, advertising, merchandising and salesmanship, among others. During TREP$, children find themselves researching on their own initiative for their own benefit to create something that is purely theirs. Depending on the age of the participant, parents will have varying involvement in the adventure.
Unlike any other business program offered to children, TREP$ ends with an ultimate culminating activity: The TREP$ Marketplace, where the children come as vendors to sell their goods and services to real consumers for real money. It has been rightly said, that self-esteem cannot be given, but needs to be earned. TREP$ is a place where all children can earn self-esteem by working hard and earning their own money. Children will learn that with passion and the right skill set, they can be successful entrepreneurs. As adults, we recognize that these same skills will ensure success in virtually any path they should choose. This program is applicable for students from grades 5 through 9.
Discover what your children are capable of by offering this innovative program to the children. You will notice. Their teachers will notice. You will see motivated students who have learned that in business they are required to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom. Through the lessons in the workshops, the children make the connection between how they behave, and how they are perceived. They learn to be professional to gain respect.
The result is higher self-esteem and a greater sense of control over their lives and futures.
